Fitness for the Ageing Brain Study II (FABS II)
Can physical activity delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease?
This is the question that WACHA's researchers are asking in a new research program being conducted in 3 states around Australia. Perth is one of those sites.
The new study "Fitness for the Ageing Brain Study II" (FABS II) will target people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's living at home who have a family a member or friend who would be happy to join the study as well.
The physical activity program is a 24-week home-based program of 150 minutes of moderate walking per week. Participants will have an individual program designed for them. They will have cognitive and health and fitness tests at the start of the program and at follow-ups each 6 months for 12 months.
The study hopes to show that those who participate in the 24-week program of physical activity will experience significantly less memory loss by the end of the program than participants who continue with their usual exercise activity. FABS II will also investigate whether the physical activity improves the quality of life and general well being not only for the participant, but also for the participating carer, friend or family member.
We are currently recruiting for this study. If you are interested in joining in this exciting study please contact the FABS II team on: 9224 0339.
The study is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council.
