What do we mean by placebo?

Paul Dieppe

International health expert Professor Paul Dieppe delivers a thought provoking lecture on the placebo context effect. In his talk he provides evidence of this real phenomenon and how it makes people better.

Professor Dieppe's research interests stem from his dual professions as a physician with an interest in rheumatology and as a health services researcher. As an academic rheumatologist, he has a long-standing interest in osteoarthritis and is an opinion leader on its clinical manifestations and treatment. Among many appointments he is currently the Chair of Clinical Education Research, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and Honorary Professor of Health Sciences, The University of Oxford.

He has worked on the determinants of pain and disability in people and is currently investigating physical disability in older people. His other main research interests concern patient and professional interactions and the placebo response. This has led him to look into methodological issues such as trials of complex interventions and outcome measures for complementary and alternative remedies, as well as trying to understand what happens during a successful health care consultation.
