Dr Kate Smith

Kate Smith is an Occupational Therapist who has been heavily involved in Indigenous Health in the Kimberley region with expertise in aged care conditions in Indigenous older adults, particularly dementia. She recently completed her PhD on the development and validation of the Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA), a cognitive assessment tool for older Indigenous Australians that was validated in the Kimberley, Northern Territory, and Northern Queensland and is now being used in rural and remote regions of Australia for the assessment of dementia. The prevalence of dementia and risk factors for dementia in the Indigenous Australian population aged over 45 years was also determined. Dr Smith has strong links with Indigenous community members and Kimberley service providers. Currently Kate is the project manager/research fellow for the Indigenous Dementia Services Study being conducted in the Kimberley and Central Australia.
